The 8th May is the anniversary of VE day and this year, 2025, is the 80th anniversary of this important date. As a school we have always been extremely proud of our links to Field Marshall Montgomery, with his grave in the churchyard of Holy Cross Church in Binsted. At the weekend three of our students took part in the village VE day celebrations by laying wreaths on ''Monty's" grave and the war memorial during the village church service and street party. A number of our children also were dancing around the Maypole at Oakhanger village's celebrations.
This week, Beech class have given a very moving assembly all about their research into VE day and the second world war and today on the 8th May we have spent a special day thinking about what VE meant 80 years ago and what it means for us today. The whole school have been learning 1940's inspired dances to perform to parents at the end of the school day, we joined with the rest of the nation in the two minutes silence at midday, we have enjoyed a cream tea picnic this afternoon and we have had a museum of donated artefacts linked to the war in the school hall. We also had our own tribute to the poppies at The Tower of London to help us in our remembrance. These were made by Mrs Lucas' sister from plastic bottle bottoms and looked incredibly effective.
It has been an honour to reflect and remember and our children have done us proud today in the respectful way they have conducted themselves and with the effort put into the activities. We think that Field Marshall Montgomery would have approved of our celebrations today!
